U4Uganda believes in the power of education to promote sustainable change for a better life. With your help, we can provide students with the basic necessities for a meaningful education, allowing the children of Alenga, Uganda to live up to their full potential. It is our mission and hope that one day, every child in Alenga will go to school.

If you lift the children out of the dirt, everything will change.

OUT OF THE DIRT

WHY DESKS?

The best way to serve any community is to first listen. When asked what the children of Uganda needed most in order to improve their education, health, and happiness, Ogali Alfred, the Amilo Primary School headmaster in Alenga replied, "Desks."

In comparison to human necessities such as water, food, and shelter, a desk may seem like a trivial request. However, to the students of Alenga, a desk means so much more than just a place to sit and study. A desk is a tool for a better education, and a better education is the means through which these children can escape the woes of poverty. As headmaster Alfred told us, "If you lift the children out of the dirt, everything will change."

SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A DESK CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE.

It is easy to take for granted something as simple as a desk. Without desks, however, the children of Alenga are forced to study in the dirt. In such conditions, the students are physically and mentally strained — not able to write easily, sit or study comfortably, and therefore unable to properly pay attention and engage with classroom learning. By lifting the children out of the dirt, we are providing them with a basic necessity for education — and in doing so, we are giving them the best chance to learn and grow.

DESKS GIVE CHILDREN HOPE, DIGNITY AND BELIEF THAT THEY, TOO, CAN HAVE A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR VILLAGE

THE IMPACT DOESN’T END WITH THE CHILDREN.

A cottage industry was started to maintain the sustainability of providing desks to schools. Under the direction of a master craftsmen, young men and women were taught the skills necessary to build our desks. By donating a desk, you will not only be supporting the education of children in Alenga, but you will also be providing young members of the community with a new skill and a new source of income.

With more and more schools providing boarding to their students; expansion of cottage industry to include beds is likely.
